Copenhagen Architecture Festival ( CAFx ) is a platform that explores, discusses and communicates architectural and urban challenges through a number of initiatives.

The goal is to challenge the field of architecture and promote critical thinking, inspire, engage and raise public awareness of how architecture and urban planning shape our lives and the world – and how our lives and the world affect the other way around. Architecture is not just bricks, spaces and frames. It's sensual, bodily and social. It is political, historical and psychological. The architecture is human and it affects every aspect of life.

CAF × Journal

CAFx Journal is the festival's digital journal and archive, which from 2021 examines architectural and urban challenges through a broad interdisciplinary optics. Architecture, like our common physical reality, is akin to a wide range of fields such as politics, science, humanities, sociology, art, philosophy, etc. All these interfaces make architecture a universal starting point for unfolding complex societal issues. CAFx Journal complements the festival's program with in-depth articles, film , references, etc., just as Journal disseminates independent contemporary relevant topics outside the festival's programme.

Architecture is not just bricks, spaces and frames. It's sensual, bodily and social. It is political, historical and psychological. The architecture is human and it affects every aspect of life.

CAF × Festival

CAFx is primarily scandinavia's largest annual architecture festival, which since its establishment in 2014, through lectures, exhibitions, field trips, debates, a comprehensive film programme, etc., every year focuses on the places where the transformations of architecture are crossed with human life. The festival depicts visions, conflicts and historical changes in the built environment, and explores the boundaries between aesthetics, function and identity.

CAFx also facilitates annual "Summer Schools" with an experimental focus on the relationship between film and spaces. Under a new annual thematic framework, participants from all over the world gather either digitally or in Denmark for an intensive research course that culminates in the production of a number of new experimental short films. CAFx Summer Schools has been run annually since 2016 at a new location each year.

CAF × Publications

CAFx also publishes publications and in 2019 was behind the publication of manifest relay and in 2020 published the book The Welfare City in Transition – A compilation of Texts and Images 1923 – 2020 in collaboration with the Architect's Publishers. Both publications deal with the development of the Danish built environment, both through historical reflection and critical visionary future orientation.

CAF × Research and Education

CAFx has been actively engaged in research and educationsince 2020 . In collaboration with the University of Copenhagen, CAFx hired a PhD studentwho examines the potential of the film medium to convey architectural qualities. In addition, CAFx developed the teaching programme Vi Communities Our City, which caters to young people in education and connects architecture, urbanism and citizenship through practical processes. With support from the Palaces and Culture Agency and Realdania Philanthropy, it is currently being conducted as a pilot project in Gellerup in collaboration with Galleri Andromeda 8220 and MakerSpace Gellerup under the name Vi Communities Gellerup.

In 2015, the festival was expanded to include Aarhus Architecture Festival (AAFx) and in 2016 Aalborg Architecture Festival (ALAFx) took place for the first time. In 2018, Odense Architecture Festival (OAFx) was joined.

The festival is part of the pan-European network Future Architecture Platform and in 2017 we naturally contributed to the programme for European City of Culture Aarhus 2017.

The festival is led by founder and festival director Josephine Michau.
